From the Snack Aisle: doo-dads

doo-dads

Another great Nabisco Snack Mix that people seem to fondly remember is doo dads. It was a snack made up of 5 different parts: Toasted peanuts, pretzels, rice squares, wheat squares and cheese Tid-Bit Crackers (which were so popular you could buy Tid-Bits by themselves).
I know it sounds like Chex Mix, but as it turns out, it was nothing even close, so much that if you even compare them to an avid doo-dad lover you will get beaten. They are nothing alike. doo dads are 100X better (or so I've been told).
Once a snack staple starting in the late 60s, they really became a childhood favorite of everyone in the 70's/80's. In the 90's, as sales stared to slip due to the influx of chips/crackers/snacks that were in the market, doo dads tried out some new flavors hoping to bring them back to life, but the as the 90's came to a close so did doo dads. (though I have heard people say they lasted into the early 2000's....if anyone can confirm that let me know).

late 1980s Doo-Dads Snack mix

I remember eating them as a kid in the 80's, but I don't have the same connection that a lot of people seem to have - eating them while playing board games with the family...snacking on them during long car rides....sharing a box with dad while watching football on Sundays.....doo dads were a popular snack that many people trace back to their youth.

Sadly, they are now gone. Will they ever return from extinction? People have been trying to get Nabisco to relaunch them for years now, but we will have to wait and see if doo-dad nation gets their prayers answered.

Oh, and if you turn the box upside down, it looks like "spap oop". I've seen lots of people make this observation, so flipping the box must have been a regular occurrence for kids in the 70's and 80's.

    2. doo-dads were the best. Cheez-It Snack mix is killer though, and has a VERY similar flavor & texture. The Chex Bold and Spicy is also not bad....got the worcestershire sauce flavor. The Cheez Its are just awesome though.

    9. Please bring Doo Dad's back! There is nothing like them! They are better then Chex Mix's version. Better then anything that has tried to take it's place. I'd definitely buy them again and then all the time! I grew up with them and when they were taken away I noticed and miss them.

    11. One of my favorite memories of my late father was of he and I watching football on Sunday afternoons on TV. We would have snacks available, and one of the snacks we had available was a box of Doo Dads. Come to think of it, I'd love to experience that taste again and stroll down memory lane. Doo Dads. RIP

    14. I will turn 60 years old this year and Doo Dads still haunt me as the best snack ever created. As a marketing and sales professional, I look at the shelves full of Chex Mix and other imitations and wonder how NABISCO could lose this marketing battle so badly. Shame on you NABISCO, I will remember this screw-up until the day I die and let it be known that you have lost a good but perplexed customer. If you wish to re-launch these and kick some competition ass, I can be reached at carn_avore@yahoo.com. PS. I have won 6 NATIONAL sales & marketing awards and have taken 3 startup mom & pop companies to multi-million dollar worth. Go Figure.

    15. I remember Doo Dads back in the 70,s and when they attempted to bring them back, they were NOT even close. Nope! That yellow box was the best! I don't think even Nabisco even remembers the ingredients or process, it's been so long. It's just like everything else that's good, doesn't stay around long, even people!

    16. I use to add more peanuts and cashews to the box, I loved doo dads and I still look for them in the cracker isle. I wish they would bring them back.

  3. I last bought Doo Dads around 2004. I bought the last 6 boxes on the shelf (Clio, MI). I may be wrong about the exact year, but it was definitely in the 2000's.

Definitely a different flavor than Chex Mix. The flavoring was more intense in a great way. With a choice between the two, I would choose Doo Dads every time. I really hope that they do come back eventually.

  5. If I were a millionaire, I would pay nabisco to bring back Doo Dads. The number 1, best snack food anyone can have.Doo Dads! WHAT DO WE NEED TO DO NABISCO? YOU NEED MONEY? PETITIONS? BOYCOTT? 10. Yes. Best snack mix ever. I wrote Nabisco back in the mid-2000s and they replied saying that times moved on and interests changed, hinting that they moved to a "healthier" product line. I hope they bring them back but I doubt we'll see it. Internet sales would be an interesting idea...

    1. How could it not be one of their best sellers? I loved coming home to my grandparents house and sharing them with my sister. It was my favorite snack. Same like planters cheese balls. I miss em. Sigh I wish they'd bring them back. Last box I got was in Sioux falls, SD in 2000. Chex mix is definitely not as good as doo dads.

  14. Doo Dads were the best, no comparison. The original will always win in my book. Why can't they bring them back????? You are right, you can't even compare the other chex mixes.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Ritz 100 calorie packs are the secret to getting close to DooDads. Believe it or not...I truly think its the secret doodads comeback. It doesnt have the tidbits. Instead its like a cheeze it...But it has the same texture as i remember doodads to have..(slightly powdery) The pretzel sticks are the THIN pretzel sticks. The seasoning is VERY close in comparison. Check it out! It sucks to have a little packet of it at a time but to bring back that slight nostalgia, i have found thats the closest we may ever get.

    ReplyDelete
  16. These were the best...Chex mix is sooooooooo not even a comparison.

  17. Oh, I remember eating DooDads on the couch with my dad back in the early 80s. Chex mix, even what I make homemade, does not come close. I just texted my husband to pick me up Ritz 100 calorie snack packs. Can't wait to try this!

    ReplyDelete
  20. The first time I saw the "spap oop" was in a Rich Hall (the Sniglets guy) segment on HBO's "Not Necessarily the News", touring a grocery store and pronouncing various products upside-down. It was either that show, or that one year Rich Hall was on Saturday Night Live. That had to have been some time between 1983-1985.

    1. Six years after your comment, I am doing the exact same thing: sitting here at the computer, snacking on Chex Mix, and wishing I had Doo Dads instead! If you add peanuts to Chex Mix Bold, it gets semi-close...but still not nearly as good as Doo Dads.

      Delete
    2. And another year later I am hunting them as well . Far better than Chex Mix.....sadly that's what I am eating right now.

  22. I loved these things my mom and I would eat them all the time, I remember she would say Joy why don't you go up to the store and get us some doo dads.. wish they would bring them back. I thought about getting recipe and trying to make them myself although I'm sure they will never taste the same.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I miss the heavenly taste of the original doo dads! I was even a little disappointed when they first changed the taste around the time the packaging changed for the second time. I'd damn near empty the shelf when going to the store. Chex Mix is okay, but doesn't shine a light on doo dads. Nothing comes close. I'd love to get my hands on the secret formula haha and make my own! I hate to say it, but I believe they're gone forever because I don't know WHO Nabisco is anymore. Just like everybody else that makes stuff that folks really like........damn sell outs!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I remember sitting up late nights with my dad watching cartoons and eating Doo Dads. Those were some good memories. And only the Original Recipe would do. Chex Mix sucks because Doo Dads' little squares were more like Life cereal than Chex. Chex is too thick. Maybe some of these recipes could substitute the Life cereal squares for the Chex squares and it would be a closer representation. Might have to try that...of course, the Cheeze Tid-bits will be hard to duplicate.....

  36. My mom used to make these for gifts 60's from the recipe on the side of one of the Chex boxes. Had Rice, Wheat and Corn Chex, Worcestershire sauce, Nabisco Nibs (called Twigs now? anyway, little cheese crackers), a can of peanuts or mixed nuts and a bag of pretzels, some butter, garlic and onion powder - and sometimes whatever other cereal was going stale in the cabinet. Like Cheerios.. I remember one year I didn't like the because she'd put fruit loops in one of the batches, hehe... The boxes of Doodads were almost as good as the homemade. The Chex Mix stuff is nothing like as good as either. I think you melt everything together, then pour it over the mixed ingredients several times, make sure everything is coated, then bake for 225 or so for an hour and then let dry out the rest of the way. Careful, you don't want soggy, you want "coated".

  53. My grandfather used to work for Nabisco and would often be given extra packages of all sorts of their products, so my sister and I would always look forward to a trip to his house(as well as a chance to play his vintage pachinko machine but that's beside the point). He'd always have two or three boxes of doodads for us, when we went over, and it was always a highlight for us, we'd overlook the nutterbutters and chipsahoy cookies and go straight for the Doodads; for a pair of 9 and 11 year olds to pass up sugar in the form of peanut butter and chocolate chip cookies, thats saying something. I've tried alot of different snack mixes, the closest I've come is Cheez-it Snack Mix, but it's till a far cry from the delightful flavor mix that was Doodads. I really wish they would finally bring this back, at least for a limited run, so that old fans to have it again, and a new generation could try them. They were a true delight my families household, and are sorely missed.

  57. Even though Nabisco tried out new flavors, the "original" Doo Dads never tasted the same once they put them in the blue and white box. Growing up in the 70s, the Doo Dads I remember will always be the yellow boxed ones. It is the PEANUTS that separate them from other snacks like Chex Mix.

    1. ^ This. THEY CHANGED. They absolutely changed.

(I now live in Australia, and here we had a version of that happen a few years ago with Arnott's brand snack crackers. They eventually relaunched what they CALLED the original flavours, but the texture and after-taste weren't the same. Even though the company insisted I was incorrect and they WERE the same, a sneaky comparison of old and new boxes' ingredients list indicated that there were differences. I still have a several year old box of Arnott's Chicken Crimpy crackers. I can't bear to eat them and know I'll never get to eat one again. I tried the new ones, and only ate a few before closing the box; I threw the box away a week later.)

  74. When I was a kid, I would ask Mom to get some "spap oop" or simply "spap", and she understood it was what I called doo dads, although I'm not certain she fully understood why!

I was the only person in the house who ate them. The box they came in was politely small, relative to current snack food box sizes. And doo dads were dense. In just a small volume of doo dads, you could get a lot of snacking satisfaction. Alas, for me, a small volume was a box -- but at least I didn't go looking for a second box after eating one! I believe these may have been the first snack food I ate a box at a time, even.

Back before there was homemade chex mix, my aunt was cloning doo dads, and making them fancy by putting mixed nuts in, rather than just peanuts. It was easy to do, because all the constituent parts were sold separately.

  82. My family adored the Doo-dads recipe made with butter, parmesan cheese & garlic salt!! I've tried it with other cheese-flavored snack muxes & it is NOT the same! Please bring them back!!!!

  83. Please bring doodads back! There isn't a mix product out there that even comes close to tasting as good as doodads. I've tried every snack mix on the market and nothing is good enough! The original doodads is undeniable the best snack ever.

  85. Man, I miss Doodads. Please bring them back. I wonder if they brought them back, would they taste like they did, or taste like cardboard, lack of flavor, like everything else that is still around from back in the day.

  86. I would love to see them come back however, what made them great is no longer available either. No more cheese tid-bits, no more super skinny pretzel sticks. I think cheese itz, Chex mix, and the other similar snacks have flooded the market too much for this to ever come back.

  89. I have not eaten another brand of mix like DooDads since they stopped making them. I'm a senior citizen and haven't seen DooDads in the stores since the very early 2000's... I respectfully asked that Nabisco bring them back in the Original Recipe. Every time I walk through the grocery store I see 10 different types of Nabisco Triscuits, TEN... 3 or 4 different flavors of Ritz Toasted Chips... Nabisco, you are giving the consumer everything but what they are asking for? Can't you see that? I believe your bottom line will fair better with than without DooDads Nabisco. Jus sayin.#bringbackdoodadsplease

  91. The peanuts would settle to the bottom of the box in shipping, that's why you turned the box upside down (so they would remix) . Man am I old :)
